About Our Department
Southold Fire Department provides fire suppression and emergency medical coverage for an approximately 14.7 square mile area located on the North Fork of Long Island.
Bounded on the North by Long Island Sound, on the East by the Greenport Fire District and Southold Bay, on the South by Peconic Bay, and on the West by Peconic Bay and the Cutchogue Fire District.
The area is traversed by two major highways, State Route 25 (Main Road) and County Route 48 (North Road).
Southold hamlet, the main business district is located on Route 25, while Route 48 is home to a growing number of businesses, most being located between Youngs Avenue and Boisseau Avenue.
Potato farming, which had been a staple of the economy for years, has been mostly supplanted by sod fields and a growing number of vineyards.
Our year round population is approximately 2500 persons which number swells to an undetermined amount during the Summer season and on weekends during the Spring and Fall of each year.
